<thetext>First of all, I would like to express my thanks to YOCTO Project for pulling all the messy embedded development together. I am impressed with the quality of the document. Therefore I would like to help the project by pointing out a small typo.

This is just overlooked while porting from the older Yocto version to the newer Yocto version. I have captured the relevant context following:

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.1/bsp-guide/bsp-guide.html#creating-a-new-bsp-layer-using-the-yocto-bsp-script

Would you like to use the default (4.1) kernel? (y/n) [default: y]
Do you need a new machine branch for this BSP (the alternative is to re-use an existing branch)? [y/n] [default: y]
Getting branches from remote repo git://git.yoctoproject.org/linux-yocto-4.1.git...
.
.
.
The script then prompts you for the kernel. The default 4.4 kernel is acceptable. So, the example accepts the default. If you enter 'n', the script prompts you to further enter the kernel you do want to use.</thetext>

    <thetext>Hi,

Thanks for pointing out this inconsistency and error. I have updated the 2.2 version of the BSP guide to use the default 4.8 kernel as part of the script output. This is the version I am getting with with latest poky. See http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.2/bsp-guide/bsp-guide.html#creating-a-new-bsp-layer-using-the-yocto-bsp-script for the correction.

I have updated the krogoth version of the manual as well (2.1.2). This version uses the 4.4 kernel as the default. See http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.1.2/bsp-guide/bsp-guide.html#creating-a-new-bsp-layer-using-the-yocto-bsp-script for the change.

If these updates are acceptable, I will set the bug to RESOLVED and put the doc flag to "done." Let me know. You could probably change the ownership of the bug to Scott Rifenbark as it is a documentation fix.

Thanks,
Scott</thetext>

    <thetext>Scott,

Re-assigned this bug to you.

The fix on 2.2 and 2.1.2 looks good. I don't know whether you can fix this in 2.1 because Yoctoproject's main documentation still point to 2.1. For any newbie like me to visit the project would see it. If Yocto is moving to 2.1.2 or 2.2 soon then we don't have to worry about 2.1 at all.

Thanks,

Gene</thetext>

    <thetext>
Take a closer look at the main documentation page https://www.yoctoproject.org/documentation.

It has the reference to both 2.1 and 2.1.1's "Yocto Project Board Support Package (BSP) Developer's Guide". We can address this by either change the main documentation to point to only 2.1.2 or fix both 2.1 and 2.1.1 BSP guide.</thetext>

    <thetext>Hi Gene,

So this situation is always bad for me and the documentation. There is an error in current or past version and the development has moved past those versions. In this case, the most current version of YP for the 'krogoth' branch (2.1, 2.1.1, and 2.1.2) is 2.1.1. However, the top of that branch is for the "under-development" 2.1.2 release. I can "fix" the 2.1.1 manual with a change to the manual that appears on the web site only. The change only sticks as long as I never rebuild that particular manual set again, or if I do, I remember to re-apply the same change before building it out again. This is the problem with back-filling a change underneath the top part of a branch.

Now, in the 'master' branch of the yocto-docs, the manuals under development are for 2.2. So the fix is in place for both 2.1.2 and 2.2, which are to be released soon.

I can go in and checkout out the docs on the specific 2.1 and 2.1.1 tags and make the change so that the manuals on the website will be correct. Users that would perhaps download the manual set based on a tag or a release will not get that specific change though.

See http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.1.1/bsp-guide/bsp-guide.html#creating-a-new-bsp-layer-using-the-yocto-bsp-script for the change in the 2.1.1 BSP manual.

See http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.1/bsp-guide/bsp-guide.html#creating-a-new-bsp-layer-using-the-yocto-bsp-script for the change in the 2.1 BSP manual.

    <thetext>Scott,

Thanks for taking extra effort to fix the error in the current version.
Although there is a small chance the error can come back. Since 2.1.2 and 2.2 will be release soon, the window for that to happen is small. Therefore I believe what you have done is enough for now.

Thanks,

Gene</thetext>
