<thetext>Here is a consolidation of the many Toaster visualization proposals, so that the ideas are not lost.

--------------------------
Bug 4330 - Visualising overall package size

Created attachment 1178 [details]
quartiles_table_excel.png

I should be able to see a graphical representation of package size in relation to the total package size for a certain image recipe.

The visualisation method is TBC, but we could consider

* treemaps
* treemap variations (like Voronoi diagrams)
* polar area diagrams
* quartiles table

Or a combination of 2 or more of the above.

The graph(s) should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over sections to display information and click sections to drill down into a single package).

I should also be able to hide the graph(s).

For a good treemap example see:

http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/newsgraphics/2011/0119-budget/index.html

For a Voronoi diagram example see:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/05/03/business/20080403_SPENDING_GRAPHIC.html

For a polar area diagram example, see:

http://awesome.good.is.s3.amazonaws.com/transparency/web/1010/political-climate-chart/interactive.html

I've attached an image of a quartiles table built with Excel (see quartiles_table_excel.png). You can download the original file from

http://labs.juiceanalytics.com/assets/themes/labs/chartchooser/downloads/quartiles_table.xls

--------------------------
Bug 4331 - Visualising single package size

Created attachment 1179 [details]
quartiles_table_excel.png

I should be able to see a graphical representation of single package size broken down by directory and file. This graphical representation should be linked to the total package size one (see bug 4330).

The visualisation method is TBC, but we could consider

* treemaps
* treemap variations (like Voronoi diagrams)
* polar area diagrams
* quartiles table

Or a combination of 2 or more of the above.

The graph(s) should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over sections to display information and click sections to drill down into a directory).

I should also be able to hide the graph(s).

For a good treemap example see:

http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/newsgraphics/2011/0119-budget/index.html

For a Voronoi diagram example see:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/05/03/business/20080403_SPENDING_GRAPHIC.html

For a polar area diagram example, see:

http://awesome.good.is.s3.amazonaws.com/transparency/web/1010/political-climate-chart/interactive.html

I've attached an image of a quartiles table built with Excel (see quartiles_table_excel.png). You can download the original file from

http://labs.juiceanalytics.com/assets/themes/labs/chartchooser/downloads/quartiles_table.xls

--------------------------
Bug 4400 - Visualising brought in by relationships between packages

I should be able to see a graphical representation of the brought in by relationships between the packages included in a certain base image recipe.

The visualisation method is TBC, but we could consider a network graph. The graph should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over nodes to display information and click nodes to drill down). I should also be able to hide the graph.

For a good network graph example see:

http://visual.ly/network-graph-programming-languages-influence?view=true

--------------------------
Bug 4301 - recipes: Visualising brought in by relationships between recipe

I should be able to see a graphical representation of the brought in by relationships between the recipes included in a certain base image recipe.

--------------------------
Bug 4285 - tasks: Visualising relationships between tasks

I should be able to visualise the relationship between a selected task and other tasks run as part of the same build.

The visualisation method is TBC. We could consider trees and Gantt charts.

As part of a task information, we'll be listing task dependencies and execution order (people can see which tasks executed before and after the selected task).

I am not sure how much a visualisation would contribute (compared to other visualisations, this one is definitely less important). So I am going to change the milestone to 'Future'.

If someone disagrees with this, please let me know.

--------------------------
Bug 4376 - Visualising directory structure of built images

I should be able to see a graphical representation of the image directory structure.

The visualisation method is TBC, but we could consider sunburst diagrams.

The graph should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over sections to display information and click sections to drill down into a directory).

I should also be able to hide the graph(s).

For more information on sunburst diagrams and their suitability for representing file systems, see:

http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~john.stasko/papers/ijhcs00.pdf

--------------------------
Bug 4384 - Visualising build time information

I should be able to see a graphical representation of build time per task and build time per recipe. We could also consider task type (configure, compile, install, package, etc).

The visualisation method is TBC, but for build time per task we could consider floating bar charts (similar to what's provided by pybootchartgui). For build time per recipe we might consider treemaps and their variations.

The graph(s) should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over sections to display information and click sections to view details for a single task / recipe).

I should also be able to hide the graph(s).

--------------------------
Bug 4399 - recipes: Visualising dependency relationships between recipes

I should be able to see a graphical representation of the dependency relationships between the recipes included in a certain base image recipe.

--------------------------
Bug 4329 - Visualising dependency and recommends relationships between packages

I should be able to see a graphical representation of the dependency and recommends relationships between the packages built for a certain base image recipe.

The visualisation method is TBC, but we could consider a network graph. The graph should be interactive (zoom, pan, hover over nodes to display information and click nodes to drill down).

I should be able to hide dependencies or recommends nodes, and I should also be able to hide the graph.

For a good network graph example see:
