<thetext>Recent changes to the Yocto Project git server is causing links to no longer work. For example, the "web repo" link in
https://layers.openembedded.org/layerindex/branch/master/layer/meta-arm/
connects to
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-arm
But that link no longer works, and should be
https://git.yoctoproject.org/meta-arm

Similar for meta-qcom
https://layers.openembedded.org/layerindex/branch/master/layer/meta-qcom/
and meta-intel
https://layers.openembedded.org/layerindex/branch/master/layer/meta-intel/
and probably many others.

It is probably safer to do a change across the layer index to address the broken URLs, than notify each layer owner and wait for them to fix it.</thetext>

    <thetext>The /cgit/ paths are from the "Edit Layer" (or "Submit Layer") form. Most folks probably ignore those fields (or don't know what they should be) when they fill in the form.

For instance for meta-qcom:

Repository web interface URL:
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-qcom
URL of the web interface for browsing the repository, if any
Web interface type

(custom)
Type of web interface (helps to auto-determine other URL fields)
Repository web interface tree base URL:
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-qcom/tree/%path%?h=%branch%
Base URL for the web interface for browsing directories within the repository, if any
Repository web interface file base URL:
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-qcom/tree/%path%?h=%branch%
Base URL for the web interface for viewing files (blobs) within the repository, if any
Repository web interface commit URL:
http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-qcom/commit/?id=%hash%
Base URL for the web interface for viewing a single commit within the repository, if any</thetext>

    <thetext>Piotr, there are two parts to this. One will be fixing the database (the metadata which is why this bug is filed under that component). The other is the auto-populated fields.

We should like revisit the "cgit" default values, which seem to be populated by:
https://git.yoctoproject.org/layerindex-web/tree/layerindex/tools/import_layer.py#n43

    if repoval.startswith('git://git.openembedded.org/'):
        reponame = re.sub('^.*/', '', repoval)
        layer.vcs_web_url = 'http://cgit.openembedded.org/' + reponame
        layer.vcs_web_tree_base_url = 'http://cgit.openembedded.org/' + reponame + '/tree/%path%?h=%branch%'
        layer.vcs_web_file_base_url = 'http://cgit.openembedded.org/' + reponame + '/tree/%path%?h=%branch%'
        layer.vcs_web_commit_url = 'http://cgit.openembedded.org/' + reponame + '/commit/?id=%hash%'
    elif repoval.startswith('git://git.yoctoproject.org/'):
        reponame = re.sub('^.*/', '', repoval)
        layer.vcs_web_url = 'http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/' + reponame
        layer.vcs_web_tree_base_url = 'http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/' + reponame + '/tree/%path%?h=%branch%'
        layer.vcs_web_file_base_url = 'http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/' + reponame + '/tree/%path%?h=%branch%'
        layer.vcs_web_commit_url = 'http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/' + reponame + '/commit/?id=%hash%'</thetext>

    <thetext>After looking at the issue, I noticed that a redirect has been set up for the /cgit/cgit.cgi/* -> /*, so URLs like http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-arm still work and are automatically redirected to https://git.yoctoproject.org/meta-arm

I discussed this with Tim, and we agreed to not work on the fix until the situation around final structure of URLs for https://git.yoctoproject.org/ is clear.

I made the initial fix and uploaded it to https://github.com/yoctoproject/layerindex-web/pull/2 - once the situation is clear on how this should be resolved, I can pick up those changes and send them as patch or discard them.</thetext>

    <thetext>From IRC:

<moto-timo> Tim Orling
halstead: did you re-enable the /cgit/ redirects? we weren't sure if it's still "broken"
1:00 PM <halstead> Michael Halstead
moto-timo: The redirects are up again. We should stop depending on them though.

So I believe we should proceed with the patch. I'll review and keep it moving.</thetext>

    <thetext>Hi all. Tim closed my defect as a duplicate of this one.

I would like to mention that this issue is breaking Toaster right now for YP 6.0 (bug #16304). Also, this is blocking Daiane in writing his Yocto Project 6.0 "Wrynose" book. This fix is highly desired and anticipated.

It appears that the proposed patch addresses both "git:" to "https:" and the removal of "cgit/cgit.cgi", so it has my endorsement.

Toaster does care about all those lesser used metadata values like "vcs_web_tree_base_url".

Links with "cgit" (like "http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-arm") definitely do NOT work anyone (per the post 2026-04-09).

Thanks, David</thetext>
