<thetext>Set this in local.conf:

PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto = "3.4%"

to build a qemux86 image with 3.4 kernel. But the machine specific settings in poky.conf overrides this and continue building 3.8 kernel.

As a user I think the generic settings in local.conf reflects the user's intent and should have the highest priority.

4461 # $PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto [5 operations]
4462 # set /home/liusong/yocto/yp-beta-build/conf/local.conf:249
4463 # "3.4%"

What about using PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto_qemux86 = "3.4%" ?

<thetext>This is working as designed, even if it is not intuative. As Chen points out, you can use a machine override to force this, or you can use the forcevariable override which wins over all others:

PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto_forcevariable = "3.4%"</thetext>
