This results in having to use a smaller UEFI shell binary and limits debug and similar capabilities. Scott Duplichan has been working to add both basic optimization and LTCG/LTO in the edk2-devel thread "Enable optimization for gcc x64 builds". However, I suspect his work only applies to edk2 trunk, not the UDK2014.SP1 branch that Minnowboard appears to build from.
