$ recipetool create https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/releases/download/0.32.0/meson-0.32.0.tar.gz
NOTE: Fetching git://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/releases/download/0.32.0/meson-0.32.0.tar.gz;protocol=https...
ERROR: Fetcher failure: Fetch command [...] git -c core.fsyncobjectfiles=0 ls-remote https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/releases/download/0.32.0/meson-0.32.0.tar.gz failed with exit code 128, output:
fatal: repository 'https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/releases/download/0.32.0/meson-0.32.0.tar.gz/' not found

That would be oe-core 7998dc35 being over-eager. I guess it should examine the URL further and identify if its a git repo or a tarball (/releases/ or /archives/ should be all cases?)

FYI I also added oe-selftest tests for this:
