this would obviate the need to jump through ip address hoops in order to mount the samba container from the host.

After looking into this more I'm not even sure this is feasible. The broadcast packets get into the container, but then the wins server returns the ip address inside the container.

And this really only provides much benefit when using docker toolbox, the "docker for mac" and "docker for windows" will always use localhost.
