One of the things you would commonly want to cp into a wic image using wic cp is lib/modules/kernel-version.  This would require a recursive copy.
e.g. 
wic cp modules--4.x.x/ wicimage:/lib/modules/

the following commits from Daniel Dragomir in oe-core add this feature:

1ed38aff5f81 ("wic/engine: fix copying directories into wic image with ext* partition")
6de3d2602f4f ("oeqa/selftest/wic: test recursive dir copy on ext partitions")
cb536737be ("wic/engine: error on old host debugfs for standalone directory copy")

I need to verify the docs/help have been updated.
