When switching image type for "Base image" field, there will be a dialog asking if user want to cancel/remove the image type. But no matter whether I click cancel or remove button, the total package number shown for "Image contents" field will increase.

Fixed in BitBake master: 737d1bc819b192b4c2caa0482bddb6921b5aac93

"lib/bb/hob: fix changing base image

The path is not guaranteed to always point to the same value so do not rely
on it to change the image contents. Further, when changing the base image
we should maintain user selections.

Verify the bug with commit f974868cadf74d0cf8380b2c6a4152d2fa4590b5, the bug is fixed.
