Description Tim Orling 2019-04-03 20:37:14 UTC
cdrtools-native [1] provides mkisofs which is used in bootimg.bbclass [2] to build ISO images. Debian and Ubuntu have long since moved on to xorriso, which is more recently maintained and has a "xorriso -as mkisofs" compatibility mode. GNU xorriso [3] is GPLv3+, when libreadline is linked in. Upstream libburnia [4], which is the actual canonical source of xorriso, remains GPLv2+ [5]. There is already a recipe for xorriso in meta-filesystems, although it needs to be updated to 1.5.0 release (or a git snapshot of 1.5.1-dev as there are bug fixes pending).

Comment 1 Ross Burton 2019-04-03 20:42:14 UTC
My current thinking is that ISO image generation is these days sufficiently niche that we can:

1) update xorriso in meta-filesystmes
2) port bootimg to use xorriso
3) remove cdrecord from oe-core
4) make meta-filesystems a dependency for ISO generation

CCing our glorious architect for his opinion.

I'd probably prefer to move things into core if its a small set of things but I don't now how much is involved.
Comment 3 Gregor Zatko 2020-02-15 07:02:55 UTC
To sum things up - is Ross' comment a way how to rework this one or shall we change some step of it?
Comment 4 Gregor Zatko 2020-05-30 13:54:40 UTC
I have this more or less prepared. My question is - where to add the layer dependency, into bblayers.conf.sample?
Comment 5 Randy MacLeod 2022-06-23 15:04:01 UTC
Gregor
Please provide a pointer or an RFC commit / patches to the yocto list
so we can dicuss what to do next, if anything.
Comment 6 Ross Burton 2022-06-23 15:08:38 UTC
So libburnia and friends are still alive at https://dev.lovelyhq.com/libburnia, libiso-burn was touched 3 days ago, libisofs 3 weeks ago, libburn 3 months. So,
Comment 7 Randy MacLeod 2023-04-21 18:45:46 UTC
Moved en masse from 4.2 to 4.3 by Randy.
Comment 8 Ross Burton 2024-04-30 13:19:10 UTC
The libburnia recipes in meta-oe have been refreshed, so this should be a matter of s/mkisofs/xorrisofs/ and then potentially moving the recipes into core.
