It looks like from 3.0 as pointed out here[1] to switch to systemd as the init manager you just need to do:

INIT_MANAGER = "systemd"

But in a different place in the manual it's described the old way[2]:

DISTRO_FEATURES_append = " systemd"
VIRTUAL-RUNTIME_init_manager = "systemd"

DISTRO_FEATURES_BACKFILL_CONSIDERED = "sysvinit"

VIRTUAL-RUNTIME_initscripts = ""

The issues is still there.

Anyway, INIT_MANAGER is no longer part of the Variable Index. It looks obsolete.
I'll double check the manual to look for a correct solution.

INIT_MANAGER is definitely not obsolete and should be added to the variable index.
