These systems are getting an IP address by DHCP and that works for Halstead rather than static IP addresses since the systems can move around and the static IP address assignment does change between distros. (Could be abstracted by a configuration tool!)

RP thinks that this may happen when systemd ntp is skewing the time on the worker.

Richard suspects that there was a kernel panic and so with the kernel changing, we are unlikely to see it again. Re-open if that's wrong!
