Description Paulo Neves 2022-08-08 13:39:20 UTC
The reference manual section for "required packages[1]" has more entries than the ones required. Specifically it includes entries like (iputils-ping, libegl1-mesa libsdl1.2-dev and mesa-common-dev) which are likely related to running qemu, a process that is not required to build and use the Yocto project.

xterm is also not required for building anymore as well[2].

Finally python3-distutils should be added as per insane check[3].

Will test which requirements are still necessary.
We are supposed to include packages that we need to run QEMU.
xterm is probably not necessary any more indeed.
Comment 2 Michael Opdenacker 2022-08-11 14:39:46 UTC
Note from Alex Belloni: we build libsdl:

#
# By default native qemu will build with a builtin VNC server where graphical output can be
# seen. The line below enables the SDL UI frontend too.
PACKAGECONFIG:append:pn-qemu-system-native = " sdl"
# By default libsdl2-native will be built, if you want to use your host's libSDL instead of
# the minimal libsdl built by libsdl2-native then uncomment the ASSUME_PROVIDED line below.
#ASSUME_PROVIDED += "libsdl2-native"
Comment 3 Michael Opdenacker 2022-08-11 15:06:11 UTC
Would be useful to mention which packages are just needed for QEMU.
Comment 4 Michael Opdenacker 2022-11-03 15:15:01 UTC
A patch was sent by Jose Neves to remove xterm:
https://lists.yoctoproject.org/g/docs/message/3455
Comment 5 Michael Opdenacker 2023-05-03 08:50:02 UTC
Note that SDL host packages are no longer needed to run QEMU, even without the "nographic" option. This was tested on Ubuntu 22.04.
Comment 6 Michael Opdenacker 2023-05-03 09:03:00 UTC
Just sent a patch to remove no longer necessary host packages:

I had to install sdl2-image because of:

 ldd /mnt/builds/viso/builds/build/tmp/work/x86_64-linux/qemu-helper-native/1.0/recipe-sysroot-native/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64
	libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0 => not found

runqemu ovmf slirp kvm nographic tmp/deploy/images/qemudevice/app-image-qemudevice.rootfs.qemuboot.conf

runqemu - ERROR - Failed to run qemu: /builds/build/tmp/work/x86_64-linux/qemu-helper-native/1.0/recipe-sysroot-native/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
