The chain of Python bugs ends with https://github.com/python/cpython/commit/45a78f906d2d5fe5381d78466b11763fc56d57ba which fixes this in 3.9 onwards.

We might need to consider this Not Our Problem and just ignore it until 3.8 disappears from use.
