The iconv error is a red herring, the output gets truncated:

       --force-vermagic
           Every module contains a small string containing important
           information, such as the kernel and compiler versions. If a module
<<< run_serial(): command timed out after 60 seconds without output >>>

I believe this is related to the serial console problems that have been causing trouble.

Closing, I think this was a result of the serial console disaster. If it happens again we can reopen.
