Load on the host system was variable during the tests, so that probably plays a factor here and if there's a timeout, increased load could occasionally push the duration to exceed it like we've seen in other bugs (e.g. https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15884) - The test suite also seems to use cmp for some tests, and the ptest image includes the busybox version by default, so taking the same approach of adding diffutils to the ptest RDEPENDS (like in 15884) might help here. This still needs testing. I ran a test last night where diffutils was added to the ptest RDEPENDS for parted like in 15884, and compared to the prior runs I saw a much more consistent duration for the ptests, varying at most about 3-4 seconds from the ~390s mark. For the record, with diffutils installed the test seems to save 5-10 seconds of runtime under light or no load. Heavier loads make it seem more variable. Still testing. I can occasionally spot spikes as high as 760s (from a typical baseline of ~390s) without diffutils, while with it I've seen a typical runtime of ~384s with a high of ~590s. With QEMU's process limited to a single core with taskset, I see 'ERROR: Exited from signal Killed (9)' every time in 20 ptest runs. The failing tests in this case are: t1100-busy-label.sh (19 times, every run after the first) - uses "compare" 4 times t1104-remove-and-add-partition.sh (2 times, runs 5 and 6) - uses "compare" 0 times where "compare" is a shell function that wraps a call to cmp through compare_. It has taken me a while to get back to this. I think I was looking in the wrong place before, because t1100-busy-label.sh seems fine. What isn't fine however is t9040-many-partitions.sh. I wrote a local patch just to add some echo calls before each command in the test script, and it seems that the hanging call is here:
