Description Alessandro Quirile 2026-02-03 09:15:06 UTC
We would like to request support for using CentOS Stream 9 as a valid build host for Yocto Project Scarthgap.

At the moment, Scarthgap does not officially support CentOS Stream 9 as a host distribution (see: https://docs.yoctoproject.org/5.0.15/ref-manual/system-requirements.html#supported-linux-distributions). This prevents our development team from running the Yocto build system in our standard corporate Linux environment, where CentOS Stream 9 is the (only) approved platform.

Expected outcome: official inclusion of CentOS Stream 9 in the list of supported host distributions.

Below is the system kernel information, with any sensitive identifiers removed: Linux <redacted-hostname> 5.14.0-598.el9.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Jul 8 16:37:49 UTC 2025 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hi Alessandro,

We do support AlmaLinux 9 and Rocky Linux 9 for scarthgap, these are similar to CentOS Stream 9 so I expect that a build should probably work. Are you seeing any specific issues or failures?

We'll discuss whether we can extend our testing to include CentOS Stream 9 for Scarthgap.

Thanks!

Hello Paul,

Thanks for your feedback.

I tried building core-image-minimal, but I am hitting several failures in the build (all during do_recipe_qa for multiple native recipes). The full log is available here: https://friendpaste.com/1Z90Gl1rv8p2GMEujgL1Ga

The build stops with repeated errors like this:
ERROR: texinfo-dummy-native-1.0-r0 do_recipe_qa:
zstd: can't stat 8 : No such file or directory
tar: Child returned status 1

This happens consistently across several native recipes (texinfo-dummy-native, gettext-minimal-native, quilt-native, m4-native, libtool-native, autoconf-native, automake-native, xz-native, etc.).

I’m not applying any custom layers or modifications: this is a clean Scarthgap checkout.

Let me know if you need additional information or if I can help with further testing on CentOS Stream 9.

Thanks!

Hi Alessandro,

I have a few questions to help us narrow down the issue. I'll also run some tests on Stream 9 on our autobuilder if I can.

Do you have any modifications in site.conf or local.conf?

Do you know of any relevant changes to the CentOS Stream 9 config, e.g. selinux profile, etc?

Are the system packages up-to-date?

Have you previously had successful builds with Scarthgap on this system? If so, do you know if the issues started with a system package upgrade or by updating the Yocto layers?

Do you see the same issues if you use the latest commit on the scarthgap branch (d50e4680ed6f930582d907b37c9ed545a89f5c27 in poky)?
Comment 4 Paul Barker 2026-02-05 09:31:09 UTC
Sorry, I pasted the OE-core commit.... the latest commit in poky is 353491479086e8d3f209d5cce0019a29e143b064 which I think you're already using based on the build log you shared.
Comment 5 Alessandro Quirile 2026-02-05 11:43:32 UTC
Hello Paul,

I do not have any relevant modifications in poky/build/conf/local.conf file (see: https://friendpaste.com/iQmqYjJuEQYxTFLuwJuEM)

My system packages are all up-to-date.

I do not know any relevant changes to the CentOS Stream 9 config, e.g. selinux profile.

I have never had previous succesful builds with Scarthgap on this system.

Thank you.

We'll try Centos Stream 9 builds on the YP autobuilder and if that works,
we *may* add it to the supported list and documentation but we may need help
to get this supported if there are problems.
Comment 7 Alessandro Quirile 2026-02-09 08:34:55 UTC
Thank you. Just let me know whether this platform will be supported or not
Comment 8 Alessandro Quirile 2026-02-09 10:30:49 UTC
Do you have any idea about the time this activity is going to take?
Comment 9 Paul Barker 2026-02-11 16:16:58 UTC
Hi Alessandro,

We have an upcoming release build for Scarthgap 5.0.16, once that is built we will enable Scarthgap builds on the stream9 worker and run some testing. Hopefully this will allow us to declare compatibility with Scarthgap in the 5.0.17 release in March.
Comment 10 Yoann Congal 2026-02-12 09:05:48 UTC
Note: #16143 "AB-INT: do_image_wic: tar command return exit status 2" will most likely be seen on scarthgap/stream9

Those are now fixed on scarthgap.

I've sent a patch to start testing:
[yocto-autobuilder2][PATCH] config: add stream9 to scarthgap worker list

I ran git pull command on my poky/ repository, but I am still facing this warning "WARNING: Host distribution "centos-9" has not been validated with this version of the build system; you may possibly experience unexpected failures. It is recommended that you use a tested distribution."

This is happening when I run bitbake core-image-minimal.

Build Configuration:
BB_VERSION           = "2.8.1"
BUILD_SYS            = "x86_64-linux"
NATIVELSBSTRING      = "centos-9"
TARGET_SYS           = "x86_64-poky-linux"
MACHINE              = "qemux86-64"
DISTRO               = "poky"
DISTRO_VERSION       = "5.0.17"
TUNE_FEATURES        = "m64 core2"
TARGET_FPU           = ""
meta
meta-poky
meta-yocto-bsp       = "my-scarthgap:cb2dcb4963e5fbe449f1bcb019eae883ddecc8ec"

How is that?

There was a mistake made when adding the LSB string in the poky.conf distro configuration file. It can be fixed by applying patch [1]. I expect it to be fixed soon on the scarthgap branch.

Comment 18 Yoann Congal 2026-04-17 13:17:44 UTC
I guess you will need these 2 patches (I will add them to the next scarthgap review cycle):
* poky: Fix CentOS Stream 9 distro name - meta-yocto - Yocto Project integration layers (Poky distro configuration, reference hardware BSPs)
  https://git.yoctoproject.org/meta-yocto/commit/?id=2ed5aa3ac9eb7082b2534f12fb6b2f7fc3dc4bee
* scripts/yocto-supported-distros: fix the centos stream regular expression - yocto-autobuilder-helper - Decoupled release build scripts
  https://git.yoctoproject.org/yocto-autobuilder-helper/commit/?h=whinlatter&id=175c16ca5807c8d6285ccdac08e2e2a50dc056dd

In the meantime, you can apply the meta-yocto one to your tree:
poky: Fix CentOS Stream distro names
https://git.yoctoproject.org/meta-yocto-contrib/commit/?h=stable/scarthgap-nut&id=0845965f1d81d22d47dcf28c525c7463fafe5245

(reopening this bug until the above fixes are merged)
