When booted to the Desktop, there are no visible icons and all the font characters are replaced with open black rectangles.

I think we've seen this before with a postinstall not running. Which package back-end are you building with?

I rebuilt with current master and the fri2 sato image had icons and fonts. I'm closing this out as unreproducible. Will reopen if I see it again.
