The directory is actually at:

/srv/home/pokybuild/yocto-autobuilder/yocto-slave/nightly-ppc/build/build/tmp/work/ppc603e-poky-linux/meta-toolchain-gmae-1.0-r6/sdk/image/opt/poky/1.1/sysroots/x86_64-poky-linux/var/lib/rpm/

I've cherry-picked two changes to josh/edison which fix this issue. I'm not exactly sure *why* they fix it, but they do.

http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/commit/?h=josh/edison&id=a676f8dd3c633c2f35f354870d7f3540c41c34b8

http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/commit/?h=josh/edison&id=953506382eebbb9f36693e682acec2186f454524

I suspect it's the latter of the two which fixes the issue, but the log message isn't especially informative :-)

Not seeing the error any more.
