Persistent tooltip example

Screenshot of WIP persistent tooltips
I started working on a persistent tooltip implementation and the attached screenshot shows the current state.
Comparing the screenshot of the current state to the example screenshot I notice a few things which open questions for me:
1) Close is on the left in the design - I guess we should determine the close button location of the host system and display the close button consistently?
i.e. my Fedora 16 machine has close buttons in the top right of the window whereas Ubuntu puts its close buttons on the top left - persistent tooltips should emulate the placement of all windows on the host system.
2) The tooltip on the example is small rectangle with multiple lines of text, whereas the current persistent tooltip implementation will create wide tooltips and wrap fewer lines - this was not a conscious decision but is how the underlying toolkit performs layout. Do we want to figure out more specifically how we want these tooltips to display?
Finally I should note that I've yet to figure out closing the tooltip when the user clicks outside of it. This is a work in progress.
That's great Joshua.
As for your comments:
1) Agree!
2) Yes, we need to be more specific on how the tooltips will be displayed.
a) The tooltip should always be displayed within the Hob borders.
b) The tooltip should be positioned next to the item it is related to without overlapping it.
c) The tooltip would prefer to have its top aligned with the top of the object and be positioned to the right of it, but if that is not possible then it can be positioned to the left (I have attached an example).
d) If the content of the tooltip is longer that the space to the bottom of the screen then it should grow above the object until it reaches the edge of the screen at which point it should become scrollable.
e) It's important to have a visual element that help users understand which item the tooltip refers to. That could be done by simply highlighting the word/icon the triggered the tooltip to appear, or by using a visual element like a small arrow. I will ask Mikael Metthey to have a look at this next week and I will send you an updated design as soon as it's ready.

Example of how Persistent Tooltips will be displayed in the Hob
Visual design needs to be updated to show all different cases

persistent tooltip new design
Hi all, I noticed the tooltip behaviour is not correct (tooltips are still displaying outside the Hob window). Check the attachment 'Example of how Persistent Tooltips will be displayed in the Hob' for rules. Also, the visual design is not correct. As the bug has been marked as fixed, does this means it can't be done on this release? If that is the case would you like me to open 2 new bugs to take care of these 2 issues in a later release? Also, find in attachment the latest version of the tooltip design. I have attached a left and a right arrow so that we can use them to indicate which information the tooltip refers to. As the gradient background may be a bit difficult to implement within the time-frame, it would be fine to use a dark grey background #1a1a1a. I also attached a close button. Let me know Hi Giulia, (In reply to comment #10) > I noticed the tooltip behaviour is not correct (tooltips are still displaying > outside the Hob window). Check the attachment 'Example of how Persistent > Tooltips will be displayed in the Hob' for rules. Also, the visual design is > not correct. Changing the placement of the tooltips is a non-trivial exercise, I'm not even sure that we can achieve it using the Gtk+ toolkit alone. For the visual design issue Belen and I had agreed that we should try and match the look and feel of the standard Gtk+ tooltips. If that's no longer the case I'll need to address that separately. > Also, find in attachment the latest version of the tooltip design. Yes, please do file two bugs for the visual design and the placement issues. I fear that we may have to moderate requirements of the design by our desire to support a broad range of operating systems. Specifically we may have to support running Hob on an enterprise Linux OS which only carries versions of the toolkit which are several years old - this may impact our ability to deliver the new visual design and the required toolkit placement. Mark as resolved. Persistent tooltips are merged and future changes should be filed as separate bugs. Marked as verified as a new bug has been created [2248] to deal with the persistent tooltip visual design and placement... |
