Description Dave Stewart 2013-08-26 23:43:28 UTC
Today, if you go to http://yoctoproject.org/documentation and look at the "current" version of the Quick Start guide, it tells you to do the following to download Poky:

 wget http://downloads.yoctoproject.org/releases/yocto/yocto-1.4/poky-dylan-9.0.tar.bz2

Fine, but today we are already at 1.4.2! So the quick start is pointing people to an older version rather than the current one.

There are two options I guess:

* Change the URL in the quickstart every time we have a point release
* Set up a URL to always point to the current point release, change the quickstart to use that URL, and always update the URL every time we have a point release.

I have been wondering about this situation for some time. The "current" docs from the website have always pointed to the last stable release even when we have complete sets of point release documentation available on the ssh server where we keep the documentation. I have been wondering when someone would hit this issue.

There is no need to fix a manual. The manual release process accounts for complete sets of manuals that are unique for every release whether they be a major release or a point release.

The simple solution would be to have the "current" link on the Documentation downloads page point to the most recent release of the manuals. In this case that would be 1.4.2. The only thing that would prevent us from doing that is if our basic philosophy is that "current" must represent the most recent major release (i.e. 1.4) rather than the current point release.

Dave's suggested second solution is closest to this. The only thing different is you don't have to change the QS to use that URL since the released QS with the point release would already reference the point released tarball and thus be correct.

I have updated the symlink in the YP website so that "current" now points to the most recent YP released manual set from the Documentation page. Most recent release in this case is the 1.4.2 point release. This will be the standard now and when we release YP I will keep the link pointing to what is most recently released.

Marking the bug RESOLVED.
