Description Alexandru Palalau 2013-09-12 06:41:37 UTC
Recently I installed a new Fedora machine and the list of required packages for this distribution from the Yocto Quick Start Guide misses "autoconf" package.
Comment 1 Scott Rifenbark 2013-09-12 17:19:50 UTC
Hi,

The autoconf package is categorized under "ADT Installer Extras" in the documentation. Is this package truly essential or is it just needed for the ADT stuff? If it is essential, I will move it into that group.

BTW - autoconf is categorized in "ADT Installer Extras" for all our supported Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE, and CentOS). Do you know if this is an issue for all the distrutions?

Thanks,
Scott
Comment 2 Paul Eggleton 2013-09-12 17:35:11 UTC
As far as I know, autoconf is not needed by the build system itself since we build autoconf-native; if it is somehow required (other than by the ADT installer) that would be a bug.

Hi,

Why you file this bug as a major?

Thanks,
Jessica

autoconf_2.69 do_compile fail
Comment 5 Alexandru Palalau 2013-09-18 19:05:33 UTC
Just added a new Fedora 19 and installed just the required packages mentioned in Quick Guide. However, building a core-image-sato image, failed on do_compile for autoconf_2.69 package. At first glance, the autoconf package installation on my machine did the trick, but narrowing it down, it was just a dependency of it - perl-Text-ParseWords - that solved the day.

Attached you can find the full log on this matter.

Jessica: Thought to file it as major due to the fact that this could affect multiple users.
Comment 6 Paul Eggleton 2013-09-18 19:37:54 UTC
I can confirm that perl-Text-ParseWords is needed on Fedora 19. The only question I have is is this also valid for Fedora 18? (It's not a problem if it's not needed on F18, we just need to make sure the install line will still work).
Comment 7 Scott Rifenbark 2013-09-18 22:11:05 UTC
So where are we with this bug? Is there going to be an actual package requirement change for the host?

Thanks,
Scott
Comment 8 Alexandru Palalau 2013-09-19 08:00:43 UTC
On Fedora 18, without autoconf package and dependecies (perl-Data-Dumper), bitbake also provided do_compile fail for autoconf_2.69 recipe.

Fedora 18 autoconf do_compile log

Without autoconf package installed on Fedora 18 machine. Also, removed autoconf only dependency (perl-Data-Dumper)
Comment 10 Paul Eggleton 2013-09-19 08:06:28 UTC
So we need to determine specifically what might be missing for F18. Alexandru, could you please check if anything more than perl-Data-Dumper is needed there and then make some recommendations for the changes Scott should make to the manual?

I have verified perl-Data-Dumper is OK to add to the list for F19 and we know we need to add it for F18.

perl-Text-ParseWords is technically not available for F18, however it doesn't actually give a fatal error if it is listed so I'd suggest just adding it to the list given it is mandatory for F19.

Scott, could you add these two to the base list for Fedora? Also, could you change eglibc-devel to glibc-devel in the Fedora base list at the same time?
Comment 13 Scott Rifenbark 2013-09-24 20:26:42 UTC
Hi,

I have altered the variable in the poky.ent file that resolves to the essential packages for the Fedora distribution to include perl-Data-Dumper and perl-Text-ParseWords. I have also changed eglibc-devel to glibc-devel in the same variable.

Changes to the variable affect two places in the doc set:

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.5/yocto-project-qs/yocto-project-qs.html#packages

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.5/ref-manual/ref-manual.html#fedora-packages

I have marked the bug as RESOLVED.

FYI, I've just installed a fresh Fedora 19 system and used the old list from the quickstart (no perl-Data-Dumper)

yum install gawk make wget tar bzip2 gzip python unzip perl patch \
diffutils diffstat git cpp gcc gcc-c++ glibc-devel texinfo chrpath \
     ccache SDL-devel xterm

and that worked just fine for me. However before installing those I've updated my system (yum update), and I believe some dependencies changed in Fedora repos as perl-Data-Dumper got installed as a dependency with the above list. Probably it's best to remain in the required list though.

Good to know Stefan... Thanks
