log file from failed do_install step of syslinux-native

Building core-image-minimal is not possible under Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit. It fails during the do_install() step of syslinux-native. Log is attached. This was confirmed by a friend also running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit.

In conf/local.conf, I have parallel make enabled, and 'MACHINE=genericx86-64' uncommented.

Manually building syslinux and syslinux-native also fail, in the same way.

Checked all the usual things the "getting started" links below, and all seems in order on my system.
http://www.openembedded.org/wiki/OEandYourDistro#Ubuntu
http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/yocto-project-qs/yocto-project-qs.html

At the suggestion of the same friend, I tried building syslinux and core-image-minimal under Debian Wheezy under lxc, on my Ubuntu 13.10 machine. Both succeeded. No errors. It appears to be an Ubuntu related problem.

I tried building core-image-minimal and syslinux using the following 2 Yocto download packages:

(1) x86-64 BSP package version 10.0.0 "Dora" downloaded from:
https://www.yoctoproject.org/download/intel-x86-64-based-pcs-and-devices-genericx86-64

(2) regular Yocto package version 10.0.0 "Dora" downloaded from:
https://www.yoctoproject.org/download/yocto-project-15

Basically, it's not possible to build any images that depend on syslinux on Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit.

To reproduce the bug:
Start up a system running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit.
Download either of the above packages, and go through the usual build environment initialization steps.
Edit "conf/local.conf" to enable parallel make, and set MACHINE=genericx86-64
Then run the command:

bitbake core-image-minimal

and it will fail at syslinux-native do_install. Your log file will look like the one attached.

Can you try to apply this patch: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhelds.openembedded.scm/66625

It was discovered after 1.5 shipped and will be included in a 1.5.1. You can also try to use the Dora git branch which has this patch included in it.

Hi Saul,

Thank you for the suggestion.
Today I was about to try the patch you suggested, but then Khem Raj made another suggestion on the yocto mailing list. He noticed that on Ubuntu and Debian systems, it is necessary to install the gcc-multilib package, in order to get syslinux to build.

sudo apt-get install gcc-multilib

So I tried it, and was able to build syslinux and thus core-image-minimal successfully on my Kubuntu 13.10 machine.

It would be helpful to update the Ubuntu/Debian section in the Yocto Quick Start guide (https://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/yocto-project-qs/yocto-project-qs.html) with this new information.

Because I'm now able to build images, I think I'll hold off on applying your suggested patch manually, and wait for the next official Yocto version.

Thanks for all your work on Yocto.

Best regards,
Markus

As you have a fix, I am going to reduce the Priority of this bug for now and assign it to our Doc Writer, he can update the Quickstart Guide, I missed that email.

Scott, let me know if you have any questions.

Hi,

So it appears we need to install a package as follows on Ubuntu and Debian systems as an essential host package:

     sudo apt-get install gcc-multilib

I will update the sections in both the Quick Start and the reference manual where we maintain these requirements.

Hi Scott,

I see that the gcc-multilib package is now in the list of essential packages. That should do it. I would say this bug can be marked resolved.

Thanks very much, your time & effort are much appreciated!

Best regards,
Markus

Thanks Scott.
Khem Raj (on the yocto mailing list) deserves credit for finding the fix.

Best wishes,
Markus
