WESTON on QEMU
Retested on master:
2) with vmware video driver (-vga vmware + kernel support + mesa vmwgfx):
- with fbdev_backend : works correctly
- with drm_backend: blank black screen (lack of support from qemu; the same image has no graphical issues on vmware-player).
1) with cirrus driver (-vga cirrus + kernel support):
either with fbdev or drm backend, weston doesn't start anymore.
Conclusion:
No hardware accelerated weston on QEMU. (for the moment, an alternative is to run core-image-weston on vmware-player which works ok)
Just to follow the qemu + vmwgfx (drm) bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46711 Asked to reopen the kernel bug. Moved this to 1.7. I think this bug needs another update. Weston needs a KMS driver on the framebuffer. Qemu supports four different ways of exposing graphics to the guest via the -vga option: cirrus vga vmware qxl. runqemu uses '-vga vmware' for everything expect the qemumips* family. The referenced bug implies that the vmwgfx driver doesn't actually work with qemu's vmware emulation. So the big question is considering we have the requirement that *all* video output from the guest is visible in qemu (including firmware boot, console, X) what is the optimum video mode to use in qemu. We need output to work in some form without user-space drivers (kernel drivers however we can just enable). I retested this today, aside form the fact that cirrus did work using fbdev for me, everything else is as stated, bottom point: weston -Bdrm-backend.so doesnt work using any driver, I will try an see what other options we have. |
Steps to reproduce: 1) enable fbdev and cirrus/qxl emulated graphics device drivers in yocto-linux 2) build 2 images of core-image-weston for qemux86 without X11 (DISTRO_FEATURES_remove="x11"; CORE_IMAGE_EXTRA_INSTALL += "libgles2-mesa"): a) one with drm (kms) b) one with fbdev backend 3) a) -launch weston by: weston -Bdrm-backend.so EXPECTED OUTCOME: - weston desktop should be displayed; ACTUAL OUTCOME: - blank screen b) -launch weston by: weston -Bfbdev-backend.so EXPECTED OUTCOME: - weston desktop should be displayed; ACTUAL OUTCOME: - weston desktop is displayed only on the upper half of the screen
