I think this could be better phrased as providing a prompt to enter BIOS during the timeout period. Something that is consistent with what is presented on HDMI: Press <DEL> to enter BIOS menu (5 sec) Or similar. John, does this meet your requirement? John please let us know if this will work. Current terminal type is ANSI @ 30x100. Darren, so there's two problems 1) During the firmware timeout screen of 5 seconds nothing is shown on the serial console at all, adding a prompt on the serial console to enter the firmware as well as the timeout that's on the screen would be very useful 2) we need a key that can be pressed from the serial console without doing finger calisthenics. <DEL> would be fantastic, and should probably be added to both the serial console and the main firmware as well. The only change I would suggest is to keep F2 as a key, it's there and it's consistent with other firmware's as well as <DEL> Understood. We need to make sure that the key is usable on Windows (Hyperterm), Mac, and Linux. The latter two use screen and minicom, but Mac has the unique "feature" of not having a <del> key on most of there keyboards. Well, they do, but it's a lie, it's really a backspace. :-) So we need to verify which common key we can use for all these successfully. I just tested with 0.74 and I do not see anything over the serial console indicating I can press a key to enter the BIOS menu. I also tested pressing DEL during the 7 or seconds of nothing, and it did enter the BIOS menu. This does not appear to be fixed in the 0.74 Firmware Release. Assigning to Tim He for next steps, and moving back to implementation. Darren, we added some prompt message for DEBUG version, But release version didn't, is it neccessary that we need to output message on console for release version, as my understanding, The release version should not have message output, even if now we have 3 line message output which is just for manufacture test. So I don't believe we need to add more consle message output for release version. Do you agree with it ? The serial output on the MinnowBoard MAX is a 'primary output' for many users. In the system boot, the video console has a message that indicates that there is a a delay (awaiting input to enter setup) occurring. Currently, that message does not show up on the serial console as the same time. The request is that even in the release version of the firmware, the delay message message should be a general user message that goes out to the video and serial outputs at the same point in time. Created attachment 2259 [details] serial output's messages Attached test image, see "serial output's messages". Log on serial output as following: >>>>SecStartup >>>>MemoryInit Done >>>>BdsEntry >>>>Start boot option, Press <F2> or <DEL> to enter setup page(5 Sec)..... I saw this message in the 0076 dev image from David Wei (for the NX issue). I found that <DEL> worked, but F2 did not. I believe this is a terminal emulation issue (sending function keys over serial is complicated without soft keys). On my display, the message was dark magenta, is that intentional? I got following feedback from John: <del> from the serial console (both vt102 and ansi) interrupt the 5 second count-down and jump to the next step, but does not go into the menu. John, could you tell us what kind of host OS and what kind of serial console tool are you using? We have to set up the same environemnt to reporduce this issue first. Could you also explain what "jump to the next step" mean? Does it mean that BIOS continues to boot? Created attachment 2307 [details]
serial output
Darren, can you test this image on your side, which output message no longer show
magenta.Thanks!
