I've got a little further by analysing the config files, and discovering thereby that there is a qemumipsel build which I should have specified.  As I hadn't discovered this by reading the documentation, that suggests to me that the documentation needs amendment to mention it as a valid build.

Perhaps the reason it doesn't mention it currently is because, when I started again, I still got an error:

1)	LocalSource$ rm -fr mipsel-uclibc

2)	LocalSource$ source oe-init-build-env mipsel-uclibc

3)	Edit conf/local.conf as follows:
		MACHINE = "qemumipsel"
		TARGET_ARCH = "mipsel"
		TARGET_OS = "linux-uclibc"

4)	LocalSource/mipsel-uclibc$ bitbake -k core-image-minimal-dev

This is really confusing.  I've just tried deleting everything, and then in turn both recloning and extracting source files from a downloaded tar, and in both cases I got:

LocalSource/mipsel-uclibc$ bitbake -k core-image-minimal-dev

The difference between the two situations described above is that in the first I had disabled sanity checking.

Can you double check that you have your configuration correct? This should be the correct way to set the libc choice and Tune file.

This not right.
Strike all above and then below
bunch of things in local.conf set

Some further observations of your build, was this orignally a 1.6.x or 1.5.x 
issue?  You list version in the bug as 1.6.1, but your build output shows 
1.5.3??

Also, you have a WARNING early in the build that might indicate an issue with 
the build, did you do a MIPSEL build on top of an existing build area for mips? 
 Can you please try a clean build of just the mipsel tune in your local.conf?

I did try a local build with the settings above and got a different failure 
with the kernel modules having the wrong edianness:
ERROR: QA Issue: Endiannes did not match (1 to 0) on

I've tried both in the past, with, as far as I was able to judge, very similar or identical results.

What I posted above were the results of a clean build.

Yes, I got a load of those as well, further on in the results posted above, but I had to snip most of them to keep within the posting limits.

well, the testing that I have done is using nodistro ( OE-Core only no poky )
where gnome-desktop-testing doesnt get pulled. It seems you might have ptest in your DISTRO_FEATURES for it to be added into default dependencies.

so remove ptest from your distro features for quick test. This error above should be fixed so that this package can build for uclibc. However keep in mind that we do not intend to build a full desktop images using uclibc. So the subset of packages is really contained for uclibc.

Did you notice your patch did not apply ?
use something like below

I was having some difficulty in working out how the patch command was supposed to work, but thought it had worked after I manually directed it to the file.

However, with above on 1.6.1 daisy, it does indeed work.  Thank you very much!

Now I have to work out how to add ffmpeg into the build ...

This was before I'd tried to run qemu.

When I first tried ...
	runqemu qemumipsel
... it demanded a password for sudo.  Isn't this somewhat illogical?  I'm not allowed to build as root, but have to have root access to run the result?  Anyway, after I'd added myself rather reluctantly to the sudo permissions file, I tried again.

I can't reproduce the exact messages, but the rtc wasn't found, dhcp did not obtain a lease, and at the login prompt, keystrokes were not echoed, presumably because, as per other hardware, the keyboard wasn't found.

Any advice?

Not directly related to this issue.. But the sudo is used to configure local network via the tun/tap interfaces.

There are alternative ways of configuring the system to not require sudo, but these are not the default in the Yocto Project.  If you feel this is an issue for usability, you should open a new defect.

Although I think it illogical, I can live with the sudo issue.  The important problem is:

qemumipsel is not regularly tested/supported config in yocto projects list of targets you can expect this kind of issues. You need to look though the metadata and see what changes are specific to qemumips they also needs to be done for qemumipsel

see

recipes-graphics/xorg-xserver/xserver-xf86-config/qemumips

so make directory copies called qemumipsel and then make any changes if needed.
they might just work as it is since they are done for MIPS BE

and please open different bugs for runtime issues. This issue was about build and is resolved IMO
