Description Darren Hart 2015-04-07 23:13:25 UTC
The gcc build results in larger MinnowBoard MAX firmware images. This results in having to use a smaller UEFI shell binary and limits debug and similar capabilities. This may be related to gcc link-time code generation, and clang/llvm may offer a better open-source build alternative to gcc.

David take this bug to investigate.

As I understand it (and from my experiments) gcc x64 release builds are currently built with _no_ optimization - i.e. not even -O1.

Scott Duplichan has been working to add both basic optimization and LTCG/LTO in the edk2-devel thread "Enable optimization for gcc x64 builds". However, I suspect his work only applies to edk2 trunk, not the UDK2014.SP1 branch that Minnowboard appears to build from. Also, it's getting bogged down in discussions, so I'm now sure if his work will be committed.

We are no longer tracking in Yocto Project Bugzilla MinnowBoard and MinnowBoard-MAX HW and firmware bugs.
