Description Joshua Lock 2015-11-17 14:34:29 UTC
In the Build Host Packages section of the Quick Start guide the CentOS instructions suggest using dnf but that's not available on a machine I just set up with the latest CentOS 7.

This should be changed to yum, i.e.

$ sudo dnf install gawk make wget tar bzip2 gzip python unzip perl patch \
diffutils diffstat git cpp gcc gcc-c++ glibc-devel texinfo chrpath socat SDL-devel xterm
Comment 1 Joshua Lock 2015-11-17 14:35:07 UTC
Didn't actually edit the command I pasted, apologies.

I used the following command to set up my system for YP:

$ sudo yum install gawk make wget tar bzip2 gzip python unzip perl patch \
diffutils diffstat git cpp gcc gcc-c++ glibc-devel texinfo chrpath socat SDL-devel xterm

Benjamin,

I added you to this bug as I think it was you that told me we should switch to using 'dnf' to install packages for CentOS. Right now the section in the QS is http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/yocto-project-qs/yocto-project-qs.html#packages. I have a note regarding CentOS 6.x users but nothing that indicates the possibility of the host machine not having dnf. Are there CentOS versions that don't have this?

Note: the perl packages in the Fedora Build Host Packages section are equally valid for CentOS. Without perl-Thread-queue installed I was unable to build automake-native.

Latest suggested command for CentOS:

$ sudo dnf install gawk make wget tar bzip2 gzip python unzip perl patch \
diffutils diffstat git cpp gcc gcc-c++ glibc-devel texinfo chrpath socat \
     SDL-devel xterm perl-Data-Dumper perl-Text-ParseWords perl-Thread-Queue

Hi Joshua, in your last comment you posted a 'dnf' command, I assume you wanted to post a 'yum' command?

Scott, indeed Centos 7 and RHEL 7 seem to have not caught the dnf replacing yum, like Fedora did, apologies for that.

This is a bug effectively

Yes, apologies - I made the same copy/paste error again.

$ sudo yum install gawk make wget tar bzip2 gzip python unzip perl patch \
diffutils diffstat git cpp gcc gcc-c++ glibc-devel texinfo chrpath socat \
     SDL-devel xterm perl-Data-Dumper perl-Text-ParseWords perl-Thread-Queue

Hi,

I have a question on this change. First - I will replace 'dnf' with 'yum' for CentOS. Second - There are some extra packages that appear in Joshua's Comment 3. They are 'perl-Data-Dumper perl-Text-ParseWords perl-Thread-Queue'. If you look at the section in the ref-manual (http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.0/ref-manual/ref-manual.html#centos-packages) you will see some categories for packages. We have added an extra one for 2.0 called "Graphical and Eclipse Plug-in Extras", which have the 'SDL-devel xterm' packages. What category would the 'perl-Data-Dumper perl-Text-ParseWords perl-Thread-Queue' packages fall under? I am guessing in the "Essentials" area since that is where Fedora has them listed. Is that correct?

That is correct.

Interestingly enough I was looking at the quick start and hadn't noticed this section of the reference manual - as there is similar information in two places it would be good if it could be unified (and ideally only edited in a single place).
Comment 8 Scott Rifenbark 2015-11-18 15:21:02 UTC
Joshua,

I think I have these sections in the manuals synced up now. Both Fedora and CentOS are very similar. I am now using 'yum' in the CentOS section. While working on this I noticed a slight inconsistency in the Fedora section. I had the 'perl-Thread-Queue' package listed in both the Essentials and the Graphical and Eclipse Plug-in Extras section. I assumed that it should go in the Essentials sub-section only so I got rid of the redundant entry in the other section for Fedora.

Please look over the following sections and let me know if this is all okay:

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.0/yocto-project-qs/yocto-project-qs.html#packages - for the QS

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.0/ref-manual/ref-manual.html#centos-packages - For the ref-manual.

Here is the section for the slight change for Fedora in the ref-manual - http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/2.0/ref-manual/ref-manual.html#fedora-packages

Thanks
