For instance, running it against webkitgtk takes several minutes, and against boost it's basically forever. The slowness seems to be around some not very efficient loop doing 'git add', but I have not looked further.

It would be great to have this fixed, as it is otherwise really a big help with updating recipe versions, taking away all the tedious bits.

This may perhaps be a duplicate of bug 11948 which I have a fix for on the paule/devtool31 poky-contrib branch, in particular:

Maybe you could give this a try and let me know if it makes it usable for the source trees you mention?
