1. In 'Select a Machine' and 'Select a Base Image' drop-down lists the option with no value (available only before users make their first selection) should guide users in the process by saying 'select a machine' or 'select a base image’. 2. Bug: In 'Select a Base image' the option with no value is not visible and an image is automatically selected by default. Provide users with an option with no value (available only before users make their first selection). It should behave exactly as Select a Machine. 3. In 'Select a Base image' dropdown, move the 'Start from scratch' option at the bottom of the list. Guilia, For 1) and 2), We have discussions at OSTS, Richard has the compromise. Belen and we agree to have a blank item on the combos. For the hints "--select XXX---", we already have above the combos. Again, I prefer 'Create your own image'. Yes, I will modify the description and move the item to the bottom of the list 1. I run a few tests in the office this morning and the feedback has been that the 'empty' dropdown looks like an 'error' as users expect some sort of confirmation on the action they are going to perform (and it's a shared best practice). If it's possible, I reccomend to add the labels 'select a machine' or 'select a base image’ where at the moment we have an empty field. 2. To clarify this point: - When users select a machine for the first time, they are required to select a base image. - If users than select a new machine (after having been in the process already), the previously selected base image is 'remembered' and automatically displayed (while selecting a new machine should take users to the original state where no base image is selected). 3. I prefer 'Create your own image' too, so let's change the label 'Start from scratch' to the new one! (It should still be displayed at the bottom of the list). I have sent new patches to put the "Create your own image" to the bottom of the base image list. For the empty combobox display for machine and base image, I think we have had an agreement with Richard and Belen on OSTS since we think there are already "Select machine" and "Select base image" in the screen. Email about Hob meeting at OSTS sent on 8th March 2012
Hi there,
I just checked the email I sent after our meeting (I've attached it) and I might have understood completely wrong, but I think what we agreed at OSTS was that we would go away and look into how the combos should behave and come back to you with a solution, considering that:
1. there should be an 'empty option' (i.e. no value assigned to it) in the combo box because no default selected value was possible.
2. the 'empty option' should only appear on loading the combo box, but it should not be available for selection once another value has been selected (e.g. once I've selected a machine I can only select a different machine: I cannot select the 'empty option').
We have run the empty (as in no string) approach past a few people, and everybody agrees it looks non-standard and, what's worse, is perceived as an error. From a design point of view, we firmly believe we should not have an empty combo. If the development team thinks we are in no position to fix this now, we'll accept that of course: we can always fix it sometime in the future.
Cheers
Belen
I think the requirement is not easy for implementation currently, since gtk's combobox doesn't have such a native functionality, we need to do a lot of tweaks to implement such functionality. I will close this bug since it has been solved in master. For the combobox's indicator issue, if design team really think it is necessary, you can report a new bug to track that. Thanks, Dongxiao I filed another separate bug 2175 in the bugzilla. I filed another separate bug 2175 in the bugzilla to address "--select a machine--" and "--select a base image--" issues. There is a separate bug 2175 to address "--select a machine--" and "--select a base image--" issues. I marked this bug as verified but I moved the critical bug around the Base Image behaviour to bug 2103. "When users select a machine for the first time, they are required to select a base image. If users than select a new machine (after having been in the process already), the previously selected base image is 'remembered' and automatically displayed (while selecting a new machine should take users to the original state where no base image is selected). Created attachment 359 [details] Example of white box above the 'select a base image' label. 'Select a Machine' and 'Select a Base Image' drop-down lists should behave in the same way: - No option from the drop-down should be selected when the menu loads, which means there must be an option with no value (right now, that option with no value is the 'select a machine' or 'select a base image' option). - Once an option has been selected it should not be possible to select an option with no value (once i've selected a machine I can only select a different machine, I cannot select again the 'select a machine' option, since that would reset the interface.('Select a machine/base image' label should be removed once users make their first selection). Also, in 'Select a Base image': - in order to accommodate advanced users needs, who might want to create a fully customised image instead of starting from a base image, a 'Create your own image'option should be added as the last item of the 'Base image' drop down (5 DAYS implementation). - the drop-down should not show the white space above the 'select a base image'label (see attachment).
