We should look at possibly switching default X driver for intel early in the 2.4 cycle. Options are xf86-video-intel (current) and modesetting. Pros for changing to modesetting: * modesetting is now part of xserver-xorg repo and the major distros have changed to using modesetting by default for modern intel hardware during the last year: this is a serious amount of real-world testing modesetting now gets and xf86-video-intel does not * modesetting has had dozens of releases in the past 3 years, vs 0 releases for xf86-video-intel * vulkan would work without xorg.conf snippets (it needs dri3 enabled) Pros for staying at xf86-video-intel: * Probably better performance in specific situations
Did not talk to the people involved: Let's try M2
No-one has expressed a strong opinion, Saul leaned towards "if it's not brôken don't fix it". So I'm guessing we stay at xf86-video-intel as default for now.
