net-tools will unconditionally use msgfmt which will fail when NLS is not enabled (e.g. only gettext-lite installed):


| msgfmt -o de.mo de.po
| make[1]: msgfmt: Command not found

Is there an easy way to reproduce this? Google provides 4 (unrelated) hits for "gettext-lite"...

I've sent a patch to mailing list.

Other notes:
* USE_NLS probably should be turned into a DISTRO_FEATURE: it's currently undocumented and the logic is just difficult to follow
* there are half a dozen other recipes in oe-core that fail to build with USE_NLS="no"
* bug 11239 (native recipes should not care about DISTRO_FEATURES) is semi-related as USE_NLS is alredy working around an issue that would be solved by that bug if NLS was a distro feature

"poky-tiny" is a user of USE_NLS="no". The net-tools error comes from

1st) Not using autotools and unconditionally calling msgfmt
2nd) The new per recipe sysroot that doesn't install msgfmt (and not picking it from the host environment)

    we really want it when USE_NLS is set.
