Description Jussi Kukkonen 2017-04-20 07:25:10 UTC
Audio playback (at least mp3) "works" but sounds horrible on my skylake NUC. Same files on the same image sound perfect on a haswell NUC. The problem is like massive "scratching" almost completely drowning out the actual music.

I'll try to find an mp3 I can attach/link to but so far everything sounds broken except .wavs, even blenders sintel_trailer video (which presumably isn't mp3 but ogg) sounds awful.

Tested on:
* D54250WYK works fine. This is an old Haswell model
* NUC6i5SYH sounds bad (Skylake)

Note that bug 11311 currently prevents testing this on the media player (visualizations not working stops playback): I've used "gst-play --volume 100 <filename>" to test

I don't know if this is a meta-intel problem -- I'm at a loss on how to debug at all as there are no errors anywhere: gstreamer at least thinks it's doing a great job playing the music.

Hmm, even this PCM file shows the problem:

  http://www.music.helsinki.fi/tmt/opetus/uusmedia/esim/a2002011001-e02.wav

so does every encoded version on the page (http://www.music.helsinki.fi/tmt/opetus/uusmedia/esim/index-e.html).

Curiously a "voice_dialing.wav" PCM file I had on my machine sounds fine.

I tested with a morty build and I have the same sound issue there -- it sounds unlikely we wouldn't have noticed this as I've used this same hardware and so does QA...

I also tested HDMI audio and that sounds fine. So only the output from headphone jack is broken.

I wonder if my hardware broke?

Confirmed to work on a NUC5i5RYH

Can cal you please test on your NUC6 device with headphones.

I tested the .wav you linked previously:

  http://www.music.helsinki.fi/tmt/opetus/uusmedia/esim/a2002011001-e02.wav

I can hear some scratchiness (or maybe reverb) through headphones on the NUC6. It was not overwhelming as you described, however. Through HDMI it sounded absolutely awful, but that could just be the crappy monitor I had it plugged into. I played the file on my workstation and it sounded clear.

Thanks. I'm thinking this may really be a hardware issue on my side then... The output is bad enough to be only barely recognizable as music.

I'm fine with keeping this open (now assigned to me) until I can confirm this, maybe with another OS or something.

This worked on another very similar hardware, I'm closing this as invalid (broken audio output)
