g_file_info_get_attribute_string() is not fully functional without shared-mime-info. For example, a .xml.gz files is recognized as plain text file, leading to the error elsewhere reported as https://github.com/hughsie/fwupd/issues/38. I ran into the same problem on OE. Let's add a RRECOMMENDS_${PN} to glib-2.0 which lists shared-mime-info. Then the lib works out-of-the box while people who like to trim the installation can still do so via BAD_RECOMMENDATIONS.
I think this makes sense. the mime DB is ~2.2MB -- or 200kB if we removed comments...
(In reply to comment #1) > the mime DB is ~2.2MB -- or 200kB if we removed comments... It's really a bit worse: The installed version is split into 800 small xml files! With 4k block size that means ~3.6 MB. I took this thinking it was trivial to do before heading for holidays but... sorry Ross, I'm resetting the assignee.
For a little more context: gdk-pixbuf already has a RDEPENDS on shared-mime-info for GIO image type sniffing (currently behind a packageconfig but upstream has already made that non-configurable and the recipe will soon follow).
Patch on the list to just add the dependency as a recommends. I have a cunning plan for the space issue...
