I rebuilt Build Appliance locally on my machine with "sumo". I modified SRCREV in the recipe to point to to the top "sumo" commit. I built BA, ran it in VirtualBox. Within the BA I built core-image-sato. Then I was able to run: $ runqemu core-image-sato within the BA as well. (There was one warning while building the image regarding the Host Distribution poky-snapshot not being validated.)
I investigated the behaviour differences between the older buildbot codebase and the newer one and found the defaults were different. I've fixed difference which resolves this bug (which was caused by old/stale versions from a build on the new codebase).
