I'd enabled a layer in my testing which included bbappends for non-existent files and caused a parse error. The GUI just kept spinning regardless... If I run the knotty with the same bblayers.conf: joshual@scimitar:~/Projects/Yocto/oe-core/build [master] $ bitbake core-image-minimal -n Loading cache: 100% |###########################################| ETA: 00:00:00 Loaded 1387 entries from dependency cache. ERROR: No recipes available for: /home/joshual/Projects/Yocto/oe-core/meta-demo/recipes-kernel/linux/linux-wrs_git.bbappend /home/joshual/Projects/Yocto/oe-core/meta-demo/recipes-kernel/linux/linux-yocto_git.bbappend ERROR: Command execution failed: Exited with 1
The knotty (command-line) interface exits with an error in this situation. The GUI should report an error and if possible aid the user in diagnosing and fixing it.
The solution I've come up with is to show the user a dialog telling them there's been an unrecoverable error and then showing the (often terse) error message from the underlying system. The dialog has an "Exit" button for the user to acknowledge the message and quit the program.

Fix is merged and I've benefited from the change already.
