OEQA test log

Test candidate: yocto-3.1_M2.rc1
Images: https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/releases/yocto-3.1_M2.rc1/machines/edgerouter/
Auto test instruction: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/BSP_Test_Plan#Test_Process
In order to reproduce it quickly, change the setting in local.conf
TEST_SUITES = "ssh ping buildcpio"

When running "bitbake core-image-sato-sdk -c testimage -v", it shows the following error message:

=================
DEBUG: [Running]$ ssh -l root -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o LogLevel=ERROR 128.224.165.32 export PATH=/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin; cd ~/buildtest/cpio-2.12; make

         You should only need it if you modified 'acinclude.m4' or
         'configure.ac' or m4 files included by 'configure.ac'.
         The 'aclocal' program is part of the GNU Automake package:
         <http://www.gnu.org/software/automake>
         It also requires GNU Autoconf, GNU m4 and Perl in order to run:
         <http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf>
         <http://www.gnu.org/software/m4/>
         <http://www.perl.org/>
make: *** [Makefile:1233: aclocal.m4] Error 127
=================

The issue is caused by version mismatch of aclocal, the version should be aclocal-1.16.

Workaround:
change automake and aclocal versions in buildtest/cpio-2.12/Makefile to 1.16.
Comment 1 Khem Raj 2020-02-05 05:46:04 UTC
I have sent potential fixes to oe-core mailing list. Since I am not able to reproduce it on qemux86-64, I would like someone with access to failing machine to try these patches out.

Comment 2 Khem Raj 2020-02-05 05:52:13 UTC
on another look this msg seems interesting

make: Warning: File 'Makefile' has modification time 59974717 s in the future

which I think triggers configure to rebuild Makefiles which calls aclocal-1.14 and that fails

so, I think, one reason why this is happening is that system clock is out of sysnc. Perhaps device should sync time before running the tests perhaps.
Comment 3 Yang Wang 2020-02-05 18:07:29 UTC
After applying this patch:

I see another issue popped up on edgerouter:

I think its better to pick both patches, cpio 2.12 is 5 year old release.

Comment 6 Khem Raj 2020-02-05 19:32:36 UTC
OK I think we need to install texinfo package along that will fix it. But real question is why is time lag happening. Perhaps system clock is not in sync ?
Comment 7 Yang Wang 2020-02-05 20:45:09 UTC
That could be caused by the specific hardware, its hwclock was set to 2018 and can't be changed due the following error:

================
root@edgerouter:~# hwclock -r --verbose
hwclock from util-linux 2.34
System Time: 1520598949.730240
Trying to open: /dev/rtc0
Trying to open: /dev/rtc
Trying to open: /dev/misc/rtc
No usable clock interface found.
hwclock: Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.
================

Anyway, looks like it's not related to this issue.
Comment 8 Khem Raj 2020-02-05 20:53:39 UTC
It is related to time being out of sync
So can you try running ntp on the device before running
This test

In zeus, there is no rtc check so I wounder if we enabled something in master
Comment 10 Randy MacLeod 2020-02-06 15:59:53 UTC
Yang, Please get ntp going and stable on this hardware with the date correct and
retest.
Comment 11 Yang Wang 2020-02-06 16:25:18 UTC
I tried yesterday with adjusted date, but it didn't finish after 5 hours and got stuck.

I will do it again today.

After ntp adjust can you just apply https://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/commit/?h=kraj/pu&id=06539e3d0e0bb7687d12bbf216ae621e59a5bddf

and not the other patch and retry please ?

Sure, test is in progress...
Comment 16 Yang Wang 2020-02-06 20:23:23 UTC
It failed without another patch, I'm sure the time is correct on the board:

so to clarify, With ntp and patch 1 above you are able to execute this test
successfully ?
Comment 18 Yang Wang 2020-02-07 15:44:46 UTC
To summarize:

With corrected time and applying only "oeqa: Use cpio 2.13 as testcase" patch, the test failed quickly with the following error message in Comment 16 (https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13779#c16):

=====================
Exception: Command cd ~/buildtest/cpio-2.13; gnu-configize;  ./configure  failed with exit code 1: checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... configure: error: newly created file is older than distributed files!

=====================

With corrected time and applying both patches:
- "oeqa: autoreconf cpio before building"
- "oeqa: Use cpio 2.13 as testcase"
the test went much further but still failed in the end with 'makeinfo: command not found' error. Log is here:
https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/attachment.cgi?id=4631

Hope this make it more clear.

yes, I was hoping that the underlying issue with time would fix the need to
autoreconf but it seems it is not. Which I kind of dont understand, because
if it was a general issue then we should see it on qemu or other devices as
well. So we need to get to root of the "modification time in future" issue
since that is all what is underlying this.

Applying those 2 patches + another patch to include gettext into image will fix
this issue, but I think it will hide the original problem.
Comment 21 Yang Wang 2020-02-07 20:24:36 UTC
With applying the new patches, I see the error below, which goes back to my original description of the ticket.

System is using 1.16 version of aclocal instead of 1.14 (cpio-2.12.tar.gz) or 1.15 (cpio-2.13.tar.gz).

         It also requires GNU Autoconf, GNU m4 and Perl in order to run:

With adjusting the system time and applying these two patches:

OK can you try this version of patch on top of master

http://git.yoctoproject.org/clean/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/commit/?h=kraj/pu&id=c1060fee258e0cff3c3380d6b9243cc1e572676c

I will redo the test when I get the access to the target, now it's being occupied by people.

Unfortunately, it's still not working.

The '--disable-maintainer-mode' option is not supported by configure in cpio-2.12.tar.gz, so it doesn't help to fix this issue. Eventually, it goes into the same problem of complaining "aclocal-1.15: command not found" since the system is using aclocal-1.16.

I did some search from google, and found this command can fix this issue:
- autoreconf -vfi

That means, the commands are:
# cd cpio-2.13
# gnu-configize
# autoreconf -vfi
# ./configure
# make
# make install

It did pass the 'make' step, but failed in the end with missing makeinfo:

  MAKEINFO cpio.info
/home/root/cpio-2.13/build-aux/missing: line 81: makeinfo: command not found
WARNING: 'makeinfo' is missing on your system.
         You should only need it if you modified a '.texi' file, or
         any other file indirectly affecting the aspect of the manual.
         You might want to install the Texinfo package:
         <https://www.gnu.org/software/texinfo/>
         The spurious makeinfo call might also be the consequence of
         using a buggy 'make' (AIX, DU, IRIX), in which case you might
         want to install GNU make:
         <https://www.gnu.org/software/make/>
make[2]: *** [Makefile:1214: cpio.info] Error 127
make[2]: Leaving directory '/home/root/cpio-2.13/doc'
make[1]: *** [Makefile:1515: install-am] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/root/cpio-2.13/doc'
make: *** [Makefile:1282: install-recursive] Error 1

That's what I got so far.
