On both qemuppc and qemumips, the core-image-minimal and core-image-rt images fail to login with the following:

Yocto (Built by Poky 5.0) 1.0+snapshot-20110922 qemuppc ttyS0

qemuppc login: root
login: no valid shadow password

Can you send your local.conf for this configuiration, is it possible you removed debug-tweaks from your IMAGE_FEATURES? that would disable the password zapping.

qemumips local.conf

I comment out the "EXTRA_IMAGE_FEATURES" line which includes debug-tweaks in my version of local.conf. I see the default one includes it. This seems to say that "debug-tweaks" is required to be able to login? That doesn't seem right...
Comment 3 Saul Wold 2011-09-23 10:37:19 UTC
debug-tweaks is the flag to disable password checking in dropbear and the allow for no root password in console login. It's the enabled by default in local.conf to allow for debugging. Otherwise as this bug notes you would not be able to login.

This flag would be removed in the real world with some other changes to allow for a default password for security.

But I'm not trying to login over ssh. -minimal doesn't even ship with dropbear. The failed login you see in the description above is from the physical console.
