Two things here: 1) Ability to turn off linux kernel and/or u-boot builds when generating images, or possibly *just* build the kernel or u-boot if you have already created an image 2) Ability to trigger menuconfig for linux or something similar for u-boot to do the menuconfig
I am not opposed to bringing in some kernel-related options to GTK Hob. We could add a kernel dialog launched via a 'Kernel' button located in the top tool bar. However, I think we need to be careful about the options we provide. I know nothing about the kernel configuration stuff, but somehow I suspect it can get fairly complex quite quickly. I would need to have a chat with Matthew to understand what the additions he proposes entail and how to translate them into a GUI.

Well launching menuconfig is one option which IS very complex but ultimately what we need to provide. I believe there is a GTK based menuconfig that we could use to match with the look and feel of hob Also, we could offer to switch to a different defconfig (a predefined set of config options) that is anywhere on the local disk or in the layers.
Once again, I am not sure our existing GTK Hob is the tool to deliver the full feature. Hob was conceived with a limited scope: a simple tool to assist new Yocto Project users in the process of running simple builds (the kind of builds you start with). I think we should consider tackling this as part of the web interface project. We, however, could think of a limited set of basic kernel-related options to bring into Hob as part of the 1.5 release.
At this point, work will take place on toaster, not Hob, so marking as won't fix.
