This commit:

is a work-around in that we don't understand why, in rare cases,
BUILDNAME can seemingly be None outside of heartbeat events.

This type of error also came up when I  was working with Sakib on

This could be hard to reproduce but it would be good to get to the root cause of the problem.

If this you see this error, please explain what you were doing and 
re-open this defect.
