I tested the normal "poky" method of instantiating Toaster, and there were no observable issues in project builds, i.e.: $ git clone git://git.yoctoproject.org/poky && cd poky I need the installation reproducer that presumably does not include "poky" in the git clone, and presumably has a replacement for the poky layer. I do not see this in the official documentation yet. I am unfortunately unable to derive this information from the provided build logs. I have pinged Ross for advice. Once I get this, I can update Toaster to adapt to the non-poky model for the newer releases and help update the test code accordingly.

There must be some path assumptions in either toaster or the tests, which should be generalised. The "new" way is to fetch bitbake (https://git.openembedded.org/bitbake/) and then run something like "./bitbake/bin/bitbake-setup init --non-interactive poky-master poky distro/poky machine/qemux86-64" (non-interactive defaults for convenience). You'll end up with something that is the same _code_ as poky, but a slightly different layout. Specifically, bitbake is not inside poky, but instead of you have bitbake and openembedded-core next to each other.

Changes to "cookerdata.py" in the methond "parseConfigurationFiles" are causing errors in building content from Toaster. 1. There is now an explicit test for "bblayers.comf". Toaster did not provide it before because it replaces it with its own "toaster-bblayer.conf". The simple fix is to pass both bblayer files and let bitbake do the override. 2. It is not finding "bitbake.conf". Toaster clones the repositories from YP upstream so that they are specific to the release, including for "master". Toaster currently uses "oe-init-build-env" to preset the environment before calling all calls to bitbake. Richard made the suggestion that in BB Setup with 3.5, the "init-build-env" model must be used instead to properly set up the environment, and that is why cooker cannot find "bitbake.conf". That is awkward in that this file is generated as part of BB Setup for new builds, and Toaster's creation of local build directories need to simulate that and other build directory structural changes. I will also mention for completeness that we now get warnings that BB really wants whitespace separators for assignments in the conf files, so this is another minor fox to do.

I have Toaster builds working. Changes ('toaster' and 'localhostbecontroller.py'): 1. If no ".templateconf" assume Poky and not OE 2. Use "init-build-env" script instead of 'oe-init-build-env' directly, but "cd" to the clone and not the local installation. 3. Include "bblayers.conf" because "cookerdata.py" now explicitly required it, and let it be over-ridden by the usual "toaster-bblayers.conf". 4. Force the value "TOPDIR" in "toaster.conf"to the local project's directory. Normally "cookerdata.py" sets TOPDIR from getcwd(), but somehow the CWD has become ".../layers/openembedded-core", so "bitbake.conf and all other files cannot be found. This non-obvious problem was hard to discover. Until this is understood, the forced value will make things work. Next steps: 1. Post the current patch to unblock Toaster 2. Check to see if there are additional potential issues when Poky is formally disabled. 3. Review some of the defaults of Toaster, like where it places ccache and dndir (currently the shared directly where the build dirs are) 4. Review the test suite if is still has issues, and is not installing up Toaster correctly for bb-setup installations.

Toaster is currently failing for "master" because it has legacy hard-coded layer paths into "poky" for the core three layers. Now that Richard has removed that content from Poky" the defaults need to be updated. I am working on a patch. Also, the Layer Index is lacking any information on “Whinlatter” so it needs to be updated to test the new release.

Notes... Classic Toaster hard-coded the three basic layers (openembedded-core, meta-poky, meta-yocto-bsp) to "git.yoctoproject.org/poky" because it also got the bitbake repo for free. The real subtlety is that "bitbake" is not a layer in the Layer Index. It is a special layer implicit in the environment and not in "bblayers.conf", and that is why the above trick was effective to also bring in the respective branch of bitbake as a side effect into Toaster builds. The new Toaster will need to: (a) Use the normal repo paths for the core repos (b) Explicitly clone the related bitbake releases (c) Use the path to those bitbake repos for the build commands (and not "../openembedded-core")
Patch sent... toaster: remove dependency on poky distro The poky distro is now stripped of its repositories. Toaster had used that repo as both a quick way to get the three core layers (openembedded-code, meta-poky, and meta-yocto-bsp) but also a way to get the related bitbake, which was important because bitbake is not in the Layer Index. Now, Toaster must explicitly clone each of the core layers plus the proper bitbake layer. Notes on "orm/fixtures": * The "orm/fixtures" files used to hard code the three core layers to point to the poky distro, ignoring the Layer Index values * The script "lsupdates.py" is now allowed to use the Layer Index to properly initialize these layers. * The fixture files are still used because (a) they define the supported releases for Toaster, plus (b) they now define the proper bitbake repo path and branches to associate with the YP releases. Notes on "localhostbecontroller.py": * Always insert the proper bitbake into the layer clone list * Insure that both 'BBBASEDIR' and 'BITBAKEDIR' are defined in the sub-shells so that oe-init uses the right bitbake (e.g. 'oe-buildenv-internal')

I have testing the newly merged patch: commit 41b1d23b9eb092d765fa1ab0f090b50fcd838ae3 Both "master" (bitbake-setup) and "Walnascar" (poky-classic) pass the build test. I cannot test "Whinlatter" directly because the Layer Index is not yet populated for that release.
