Created attachment 444 [details] Persistent tooltip display rules Tooltip display rules: a) The tooltip should always be displayed within the Hob borders. b) The tooltip should be positioned next to the item it is related to without overlapping it. c) The tooltip would prefer to have its top aligned with the top of the object and be positioned to the right of it, but if that is not possible then it can be positioned to the left (I have attached an example). d) If the content of the tooltip is longer that the space to the bottom of the screen then it should grow above the object until it reaches the edge of the screen at which point it should become scrollable. e) It's important to have a visual element that help users understand which item the tooltip refers to. That could be done by simply highlighting the word/icon the triggered the tooltip to appear, or by using a visual element like a small arrow (in attachment). Also, find in attachment the latest version of the tooltip design. I have attached a left and a right arrow to be used to indicate which information the tooltip refers to. As the gradient background may be a bit difficult to implement in the short term, it would be fine to use a dark grey background #1a1a1a. I also attached a close button.

Marking this as 'enhancement' as this bug can't probably be solved for the next release. See bug [2080] for more info about the complexity of solving this bug.
I've been thinking a bit about this. GTK does not provide a UI widget for this element and, from Joshua's experience, implementing custom UI components is hard and time consuming. Looking at the Gnome UI guidelines, it seems to me that the standard toolkit element to provide additional details about any UI component should be a property window http://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/3.0/windows-utility.html.en#property-windows What about replacing the persistent tooltips with property windows? They would simply come up on clicking the 'i' icon, and on clicking a recipe / package / task name in the Recipes and Packages screens. If everybody is mildly happy with this solution, let me know, and I can provide some guidelines on how the information should be presented within those property windows. Thanks! Belen
yes there has another hard point to change gtk tooltip to custom UI tooltip, the implement of gtk tooltip so far is embedded to the different widget's expose process, I would find a common way to change all this existed tooltips, can someone help me.
Created attachment 735 [details] property windows for additional information As agreed, a suggestion on how we could replace our existing persistent tooltips with property windows to display additional information about recipes, packages and tasks. Let me know what you think. Cheers Belen
