With 1.2 M4, I find on a 32bit host(Ubuntu 10.04), gdb failed to compile due to find the wrong path for libexpat. It's because that gdb will check libexpat. On 32bit host, there will be native libexpat under /usr/lib/. It will use the native one instead of the one under sysroot.
