Description Hollis Blanchard 2012-08-07 16:45:01 UTC
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhelds.openembedded.core/6830 describes changes to devshell that were committed in March 2011. However, at least a few places still describe the pre-2011 way of using it:
http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.0/poky-ref-manual/poky-ref-manual.html#platdev-appdev-devshell
http://www.openembedded.org/wiki/Devshell

(Needless to say, the TERMCMD method described on these pages doesn't work any more.)

The latest version of the Yocto Project Development Manual now contains this section on the devshell. For the 1.1 version the section was in the Yocto Project Reference Manual. See this link for the latest section on the devshell in question here.

http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.3/dev-manual/dev-manual.html#platdev-appdev-devshell

Please review this and tell me if it satisfies the issue.

Thanks,
Scott

The new content should probably mention OE_TERMINAL, and the other information included in that first URL.

In my case, my build server says:
ERROR: Unable to spawn terminal auto: Execution of '/bin/bash' failed with exit code 1:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module": libpk-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to summon the GConf demon; exiting. Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: X11 autolaunch support disabled at compile time.

... so knowing how to pick a setting other than "auto" is important.

I have updated the set in two areas: 1) Updated the "Using a Development Shell" section in the dev-manual to note that the OE_TERMINAL variable controls how the terminal is spawned and pointed the reader to the new OE_TERMINAL variable glossary entry in the poky-ref-manual, 2) created a new OE_TERMINAL variable glossary entry.

Once these changes are approved I will mark the bug resolved.

See:

 * http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.4/poky-ref-manual/poky-ref-manual.html#var-OE_TERMINAL
 * http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.4/dev-manual/dev-manual.html#platdev-appdev-devshell

No word from anyone on this so I am marking it approved.

Paul Eggleton reviewed the text and had two changes. I applied them. See http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit.cgi/yocto-docs/commit/?id=54c2b1577ba062e09a8df14767257147e33a939f for the changes.

Bug is still RESOLVED.
