I have have created documentation for this and sent to Paul Eggleton for review.  He has indicated that he will get to it when the Barcelona week is done.  You can find the section at http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/1.4/poky-ref-manual/poky-ref-manual.html#maintaining-build-output-quality.
