The following fragment in an image led to madness:

#    tools-debug \
inherit core-image

Bitbake treated the "inherit core-image" as part of the comment, which caused some serious confusion. At the very least, bitbake should suggest this is not likely to do what you expected.

Can you please give a more specific description of where you made the changes and the results obtained(a log file)?

I made the changes in a custom image file.

Try adding a line like this:

# Some text \
Some line that should do something

and build the recipe. The second line will be treated as a comment.\

There is a coherent error message that suggests the line is commented out. 
Verified in master:2cc4fe4a0874c42421b1bf3fa100160a9e60a9da
