Description Bogdan Marinescu 2013-01-14 15:56:24 UTC
Starting with version 0.9.8, oprofile on PPC needs libpfm in order to compile (and work) properly if perf events are enabled in the kernel. libpfm does not yet have a recipe in oe-core.

I saw that this bug was supposed to be fixed by this commit:

commit 4de6f9b17c6dd8d50ddb3050a091fae83e91bb71
Author: Matthew McClintock <msm@freescale.com>
Date: Thu Jan 17 20:23:23 2013 +0000

oprofile: backport patches to fix ppc build issues

but when doing a ppc build for the following bug:

https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3447

which essentially fixes a problem that prevents the 'perf events' code from being built, so that it does get built, I still see this problem.

I'm curious if the backported patches really fixed the problem, or it just wasn't seen because the perf events version somehow wasn't getting built, or how the perf events version got built in the failing builds.

Tom,

That's one patch from my series that I did not post yet. So, while it "fixes" so build issues it might not really fix anything.

I've got some more patches on my master tree I'm testing, but again I need to figure out how to validate/test oprofile before I can submit. See my other patches here:

http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/log/?h=mattsm/master

Again, I'm swamped... not sure when I will get to this.

OK, good to know, thanks.

I'll post a couple patches shortly for bug 3447.

You can follow the examples in the oprofile section if you want something to test with:

https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Tracing_and_Profiling#oprofile

I just added a new section on operf, which should always be built now with the patches for 3447:

This is blocking builds on the Autobuilder for PPC!

Patches post here: http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/poky-contrib/commit/?h=mattsm/master&id=3a7776b96e8c558b14bb92e5fc5c0c442794862d

Still need to test on a machine.
