This turns out to have been a problem with the defconfig, but after fixing that, there's still a problem in that KBRANCH seems to now be ignored with linux-yocto-custom, where before it was used to select a non-master branch. I'll take the bug, since it looks like branch handling is causing the pain.
Fixed here. I've made KBRANCH the fallback, verus "master" if no branch is supplied in the SRC_URI. Once the custom BSP builds here, I'll send the changes.
