Set this in local.conf: PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto = "3.4%" to build a qemux86 image with 3.4 kernel. But the machine specific settings in poky.conf overrides this and continue building 3.8 kernel. As a user I think the generic settings in local.conf reflects the user's intent and should have the highest priority. 4461 # $PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto [5 operations] 4462 # set /home/liusong/yocto/yp-beta-build/conf/local.conf:249 4463 # "3.4%" 4464 # set? /home/liusong/yocto/beta/meta-yocto/conf/distro/poky.conf:17 4465 # "3.4%" 4466 # finalize ast.py:331 [finalize] 4467 # "was: 3.4%" 4468 # override[qemux86]:set? /home/liusong/yocto/beta/meta-yocto/conf/distro/poky.conf:18 4469 # "3.8%" 4470 # finalize override[qemux86]: 4471 # "3.8%" 4472 # computed: 4473 # "3.8%" 4474 PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto="3.8%"

This is working as designed, even if it is not intuative. As Chen points out, you can use a machine override to force this, or you can use the forcevariable override which wins over all others: PREFERRED_VERSION_linux-yocto_forcevariable = "3.4%"
Verified as not a bug; I filled a separated bug for updating the documentation: how to easily change the kernel version: Bug 8595
