Description Tudor Florea 2013-05-21 07:44:43 UTC
Hob does not start on Centos 6.4.
As per documentation Centos 6.4 is a supported distribution
(http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/mega-manual/mega-manual.html#detailed-supported-distros)
In the same in HOB documentation it is stated that Hob requires the following packages:
    Gtk+ 2.20.0 or higher
    PyGtk 2.21.0 or higher
(https://www.yoctoproject.org/documentation/hob-manual)
Centos 6.4 for instance does not provide the packages version above.

It would be useful to mention that the requirement above may not be met on all supported distribution and one may have to manually update those packages.

Hi Cristiana,

Can you verify if this is the case, if so, probably we should update doc and assign the bug to ScottR with detailed info for him.

Thanks,
Jessica

Jessica,

Re-assign this to me and I will update. This is easily resolved.

Thanks,
Scott

This is an interesting little issue that brings up some questions on my part.

1. Does our QA process include testing to see if Hob starts on all supported releases? If not, maybe we should consider testing for that.

2. Do we consider "Hob" as part of the Yocto Project? I am sure we would.

3. Would the language be too negative to include a note in the ref-manual in the "Supported Linux Distributions" section that states while the team attempts to test all aspects of the YP against all officially supported Linux distros, there might be cases where something doesn't work (e.g. the CentOs 6.4 situation here.)

To fix this doc bug, we would want to consider some note such as the above in the ref-manual under the supported Linux Distributions section and we would want to specifically call out this case in on the Hob documentation web page.

I am adding Jefro to the CC list here as he would need to update the web page.

I wouldn't mind some opinions/answers on my three items above.

Thanks,
Scott

Also,

We reference this wiki page in the documentation for CentOS.

Is this page being maintained?

I have not gotten any more information on the questions I posted here to resolve this bug. So I pushed the fix as it is and am marking it as under review. Please see the section and send your feedback in Bugzilla:

Thanks Scott. Any chance you could write something for the Hob Manual web page?

https://www.yoctoproject.org/documentation/hob-manual

I can add it to the website when ready.

Thanks!

Belen

Belen,

I am unsure if these little sections are really up to date. (I have listed them both below for reference with the landing page first and the doc page second). They sort of tell the history of Hob from 1.1 forward. If it is all still valid, then these text sections can stand as they are. Perhaps the LANDING PAGE one could say "The current version of Hob is an improved..." instead of "This version of Hob is an improved..."

Putting that aside, here is a suggested note that could be placed in the introductory section of the Hob documentation page to address the CentOS issue. I would place the note after the bulleted list part of the introduction to Hob on the Documentation page:

NOTE:
The CentOS 6.4 distribution does not include the Gtk+ 2.20.0 and PyGtk 2.21.0 (or higher) packages, which are required to run Hob. For more information about supported Linux distributions, see the "Supported Linux Distributions" section in the Yocto Project Reference Manual.

Belen - you can link the section title to http://www.yoctoproject.org/docs/current/ref-manual/ref-manual.html#detailed-supported-distros.

Hob

Hob is a graphical user interface for BitBake. Its primary goal is to enable a user to perform common tasks more easily. The primary focus of the initial Hob release in Yocto 1.1 was to enable a user to generate a custom OS image. This next major release of Hob in Yocto Project version 1.2 is the result of a community-based design effort and represents a complete Hob overhaul. This version of Hob is an improved developer experience, both for the experienced user and for the beginner. Here is what you can do with this version of Hob:

* Modify existing images
* Create custom images
* Save customized images as templates
* Build images
* Run images in the QEMU emulator
* Deploy images to a USB disk for live-booting on a target device

* Hob documentation

I've updated the landing page as suggested, although I've modified the bullet list to match the current Hob manual. See

https://www.yoctoproject.org/tools-resources/projects/hob

I've added the note about CentOS to the Hob manual, although after the requirements section instead of after the bulleted list part of the introduction. It seemed to me it made more sense there, since it is where the offending packages are mentioned. I hope that's ok. See:

Belen,

Much better placement on the note than what I was thinking. Thanks for findingi the best place for it. Looks good to me.

If you are happy with these changes I can mark the bug resolved. The YP documentation part has also been addressed and I have received no feedback on it telling me to change anything.

Thanks,
Scott

I think you can set this to resolved.

Thanks!
